In response to a City of Edmonton design competition, this winning pavilion design addresses two major issues beyond the primary space requirements.

Firstly, the design serves as an easily identifiable urban marker for Mill Woods Community.  As Mill Woods Sports Park is a host site for major events, the pavilion serves as a point of reference for users within the large park as well as a way finding feature for people approaching the site.  Its distinctive image serves as an identification logo for the Mill Woods Sports Park.

Secondly, the design announces the City of Edmonton’s interest in sustainable design and carbon footprint reduction.  Edmonton is already a leader in effective waste management.  With its abundance of hours of sunlight, Edmonton is a natural location for a spirited demonstration project using photovoltaic solar collectors.

The design proposes a green roof building and sculpted berm overlooking a south-facing courtyard that can host social gatherings.  The building is straddled by a large but whimsical photo-voltaic structure.  This sculptural backdrop would unmistakably identify the Mill Woods Community & Sports Park through its unique silhouette.

The design proposes both active and passive solar features, including 300 photo-voltaic modules, which are anticipated to provide twice the amount of power to be used by the facility.  The project will be tied to the provincial power grid so excess energy can be sold to the utility company servicing the site.  Passive solar design features include south-oriented glazing and highly insulated north and east-facing walls.  In addition, a geothermal heating and cooling system is to be incorporated into the surrounding landscaping.
